After graduation from Lajes High, Randy attended the University of Maryland,
Munich, Germany campus but found that University wasn't what he wanted
and returned to the Azores. Shortly after his return he moved to Philadelphia
and enlisted in the U.S.A.F. and was on his way to Lackland A.F.B. for
basic training.
While in basic training Randy tried out for, and was accepted to begin,
Para-Rescue Special Forces training upon his completion of basic training.
Due to a medical condition he never completed his training and was Honorably
Discharged from the Air Force.
He went back to Philadelphia and shortly thereafter took a vacation to
Newfoundland, Canada. He returned to the Azores in 1971 and continued
working with CSB-83 Radio and Television.
He began working in commercial Radio in Philadelphia, PA, Alexandria,
Lousiana. Pensacola, Florida, and moved to Newfoundland Canada in 1973
working in radio until 1980.
Randy married in 1976 to Florence (Flo) Barnes, from Port Blandford,
NF; they will celebrate their 26th wedding anniversary in September, 2002,
and they have two children, a son Craig who is 25 and a daughter Tanya
who is 22. Craig is an Automotive Technican and is the father of their only grandchild of Joshua,
who is 4 and a half. Tanya, is attending Memorial
University in St. John's, NF studying Criminology.
Randy's
father passed away in February, 1997 after a short but valiant battle
with cancer. His mother still lives in Lady Lake, Florida where both she
and his father moved shortly after his fathers retirement, 16 years prior
to his fathers passing, from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.
Randy's dad worked with A&AFES for over 40 years and was the General Manager
of the BX in the Azores and several other locations before and after his
Azorean adventure. His younger brother David went into the U.S.A.F. where
he is still active today as a CM/Sgt stationed in Abiliene, Texas is married
and has 2 children.
Randy
worked as the Director of Marketing for Newfoundland with Texaco, Canada
until 1990 and the Vice-President of Marketing and Sales with MIA Inc.
until January 1999. After MIA Inc. closed it doors, Randy went back to
school and took a two-year Information Technology, Computer Programming
course and graduated with honors in 2001.Shortly after he graduated,
Randy opened up his own IT company, X-Treeme IT.
Over the past 33 years Randy has often wondered how his old classmates
were doing, and where they were, and he had been searching for a way and
means to re-contact them. In September of 2001, he happened to find the
Lajes High Alumni Site, and when he saw that other classmates had been
listed as found...he was estatic! He immediately started contacting old friends
only to find out that they had been looking, and wondering about him as
well! It was through this re-connection with his old classmates that the
development of this web site came to be.
It has been a true labor of love for Randy, and just a small indication
of just how much that time in Azores and the associations he had with
the people there mean to him. The fear of never having the opportunity
to see those people who have so greatly impacted your life, and have been
on your mind, and in your heart for so long, could cause an empty void
in your life. This web site will hopefully fill that void and continually
enable the Lajes High Class of '69 to reunite and stay in touch with each
other.
